THE EXUMAS
Just 35 miles southeast of New Providence lay the Exuma Cays, some of the prettiest and least visited islands of the Bahamas. For the most part these 365 islands, which stretch over 100 miles from Sail Rocks in the north to Great Exuma and Little Exuma in the southeast, are uninhabited. Many are very exposed to easterly storm fronts and, as they are low lying, there has been little development. However, wherever there is a sheltered bay or an additional protective island, you will find a small settlement, and there are actually hundreds of safe anchorage around he islands, which make them popular with live aboard dive bats and yachtsmen.
Although most visitors to the Exumas arrive on passing yachts, which are able to anchor anywhere along the east cost, in reality few people stay at sea, preferring the resorts on Staniel Cay in the north and Great Exuma, the largest of the islands, in the south. The capital of the Exumas is George Town, situated on the north of Great Exuma. Here, many visitors stay at the Club Peace & Plenty.
DIVING
Directly opposite George Town is Stocking Island, which has an adjacent barrier reef that stretches over 7 miles. Although the ref diving here is pristine, the islands are best known for their blue holes. Angelfish Blue Hole, lying in the shelter of Stocking Island, is a wonderful vertical shaft which drops to 100 feet before branching off at right angels. Nearby are Mystery Cave, a site which has been explored thousands of feet underground, and Crab Cay Blue Hole which starts in only 1 feet of water.
